Session 1

   1. Topics:

*        Course overview and orientation

*        The necessity of Intercultural Communication   

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Get a general picture of what to learn in this course and how they will be assessed

*        Be highly aware of the importance of intercultural communication;

*        Learn the brief history of intercultural communication as a discipline home and abroad

*        Understand the distinction between intercultural communication and cross-cultural communication

*        Build a personal profile of intercultural experiences and interests by filling the Cross Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI) and brainstorming their autobiography

 

Session 2  (2 Hours)

1. Topic:

 An understanding of culture I:Essentials of culture 

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Understand the essentials of culture, such as the functions, elements,definition and characteristics of culture

*        Identify and enact their own cultural identity

*        Understand how culture shapes perception, and inculcates a set of values 

 

Session 3 & 4 (4  Hours)

1. Topic:

An understanding of culture II:

Cultural patterns and intercultural communication theories

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Identify diverse cultural patterns, such as dominant culture vs. co-culture vs. counterculture, individual cultures  vs. collective cultures, hierarchical cultures vs democratic cultures, high context cultures vs low context cultures, linear time cultures vs flexible time cultures vs cyclical time cultures

*        Be familiar with various intercultural communication theories in terms of cultural value dimensions by Hall, Hofstede, Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck, Tim-Toomey etc.   

 

Session 5   (2 Hours)

1.    Topics:

Cultural Identity

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Understand the definition and the categories of cultural identity

*        Grasp the activation and development models of cultural identity

*        Develop the awareness of possible stereotypes about different cultural identities, and the ways to avoid them

 

Session 6   (2 Hours)

1.    Topics:

*        The deep structure of culture

*        Exploring the deep structure of culture I: Family

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Understand the three most influential social organizations that make up a culture’s deep structure: family, state (community), worldview (religion)

*        Grasp the essentials of family: importance, definition, forms, functions

*        Understand cultural variants in family interaction: gender roles, individualism and collectivism, age, social skills

*        Gain special understanding of the cultural variant of gender, by exploring gender differences and their communication strategies

 

Session 7   (2 Hours)

1. Topic: 

Exploring the deep structure of culture II: History

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Understand history as a key element in developing a culture’s identity, values, goals and character

*        Understand the impact of history on intercultural communication

*        Know about the influence of certain countries (US/ Russia/ UK/ France/ Japan/ Mexico/ Islamic countries’)’s history upon their cultures

 

Session 8  (2 Hours)

1. Topic:

 Exploring the deep structure of culture III: Worldview

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Understand the importance and the manifestations of worldview

*        Gain an understanding of religion as a worldview

*        Learn about the six major religious traditions and their impact on intercultural communication

 

Session 9 (2 Hours)

1. Topic:

Language, cultural and communication

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Review the communication models

*        Form a clear picture of verbal process and the relationship among language, meaning and culture

 

Session 10  (2 Hours)

1. Topic:

Verbal communication strategies

2. Objectives:

*        Grasp certain strategies of organizing routine messages, persuasive messages, unwelcome messages, and problem-solving messages

*        Realize the role and force of words in specified (Arabic / Japanese/ English-speaking) cultures, and learn some communicative tactics in dealing with people with these cultural backgrounds

 

Session 11  (2 Hours)

1. Topic:

Nonverbal communication I: body language

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Make proper cultural interpretation of paralanguage and diverse body language in terms of appearance, movement, facial expressions, eye contact, touch and smell

*        Know about certain etiquette and taboos in the above-mentioned paralanguage and body language when contacting with people from different cultures

 

Session 12 (2 Hours)

1. Topic:

Nonverbal communication II: setting language

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        make cultural interpretation of diverse setting language (such as space, time and silence) in the process of intercultural communication

*        Know about certain etiquette and taboos in the above-mentioned setting language when contacting with people from different cultures

 

Session 13 (2 Hours)

1. Topics:

Intercultural communication competence and strategies I

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Define intercultural competence and recognize basic components of communication competence proposed by researchers like Samovar & Porter, Gudykunst, Chen, etc.

*        Improving intercultural communication by employing certain strategies, such as knowing themselves, being empathetic in perspective taking, becoming a better asker and listener, developing communication flexibility, and learning about cultural adaption.

 

Session 14  (2 Hours)

1. Topics:

 Intercultural communication competence and strategies II

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Identify the potential problems in intercultural communication like seeking similarities, withdrawal or anxiety, stereotyping, prejudice, racism, ethnocentrism, cultural shock

*        Grasp the ways to minimize the above cultural barriers

*        Reinforce the awareness of being open, flexible, tolerant and mindful in intercultural communication

 

Session 15 (2 Hours)

1. Topic:

Cultural influence on context I: the business setting

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Assess the context from dimensions of formality/informality, assertiveness/ peacekeeping, status relationships, monetary recognition/non-monetary rewards of performance

*        Know various cultural rules for establishing relationships in multinational business context, in terms of business protocol, greeting behaviors, personal appearance, gift giving, management styles, negotiation styles, decision making, conflict management and use of information technology

*        Grasp particularly the factors and phases of intercultural negotiation

 

Session 16  (2 Hours)

1. Topic:

Cultural influence on context II: the educational setting

2. Objectives:

On completion of the session, students will be able to

*        Be aware of the trends and challenges of multicultural education

*        Develop multicultural proficiency

*        Improve multicultural communication competence by learning basic multicultural communication strategies

1. 授课主题:

l  课程概要与导入

l  跨文化交流之重要性

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  了解课程概要及评估方式

l  知晓国内外跨文化交流学科的发展历史

l  理解跨文化交流与不同文化间的交流之区别

l  高度重视跨文化交流

l  填写不同文化间适应能力问卷,构思个人自传,建立个人跨文化交流经验和兴趣档案

 

( 二)第二节(2课时) 

1. 授课主题:理解文化①: 文化要素

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  理解诸如文化功能、成分、概念、特点等文化要素

l  识别并激活自己的文化身份认同

l  理解文化如何影响人们的感知并培养他们的价值观

 

(三、四)第三、四节(4课时)

1. 授课主题:理解文化②:文化模式与跨文化交流理论

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l       识别不同文化模式,如主文化、共文化与反文化,个人主义文化与集体主义文层 

阶型文化与民主型文化,高语境文化与低语境文化,直线型时间文化、弹性时间文化与循环型时间文化等

l  熟悉Hall、Hofstede、Kluckhohn和 Strodtbeck、Tim-Toomey等在文化价值观    

方面的理论

 

(五)第五节(2课时)

1.授课主题:文化的身份认同

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l      理解文化身份的含义和类别

l      掌握文化身份的启动和发展模式

l      明白不同文化身份可能催生的偏见,及避免偏见的方法

 

( 六)第六节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题:

l   文化的深层结构

l   文化的深层结构探索①: 家庭

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l 理解三种最具影响力的社会机制构成了文化的深层结构:家庭、国家(社区)和世界观(宗教)

l 把握家庭的要素:重要性、概念、形式和功能

l 理解家庭互动中的文化变体:性别角色、个人主义与集体主义、年龄、社交技能

l 尤其是通过探索两性交流差异与策略,来理解性别这一文化变体

 

(七)第七节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题:文化的深层结构探索②:历史

  2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  理解历史是培养文化身份、价值观、目标和性格的关键因素

l  理解历史对跨文化交流的影响

l  了解美、俄、英、法、日、墨等特定国家及伊斯兰教国家的历史对其文化的影响

 

  (八)第七节(2课时)

1. 授课主题:文化的深层结构探索③:世界观

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  理解世界观的重要性和表现形式

l  理解宗教是一种世界观

l  了解世界六大宗教传统及其对跨文化交流的作用

 

(九)第九节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题:语言,文化与交际

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  复习已学交际模式

l  清晰掌握言语过程以及语言、意义和文化之间的关系

 

(十)第十节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题:言语交流策略

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  掌握组织常规信息、劝说性信息、不受欢迎的信息及问题解决式信息的策略;

l  认识到话语在具体(阿拉伯/日本/英语国家等)文化中的作用与力量,学习与不同文化背景的人交往的说话技巧

 

(十一)第十一节(2课时)

1. 授课主题:非言语交流①:身体语言

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  恰当解读跨文化交流过程中的副语言和身体语言(如外貌、动作、面部表情、目光交流、接触、味道等)

l  了解与其他文化背景的人交往过程中上述诸方面的礼仪和禁忌

 

(十二)第十二节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题:非言语交流②:情境语言

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  在跨文化交流过程中对空间、时间和沉默等情境语言做出适切的文化解读;

l  了解与其他文化背景的人交往过程中上述诸方面的礼仪和禁忌

 

(十三)第十三节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题: 跨文化交流能力与策略①

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l 明白跨文化能力的涵义,知晓Samovar和 Porter, Gudykunst, Chen等研究者提出的交流能力的构成要素

l  提高跨文化交流能力,学会使用诸如了解自我、换位思考中同情共感、善于发问和倾听、发展交流弹性等策略,并了解文化适应

 

(十四)第十四节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题:跨文化交流能力与策略②

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  识别跨文化交流过程中潜在的问题,如文化趋同、畏缩或焦虑、定型观念、偏见、种族主义、民族中心主义、文化休克等

l  把握减少上述文化交流障碍的方法

l  增强开放、灵活、宽容、敏锐的跨文化交流意识

 

(十五)第十五节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题:文化对语境的影响①:商务情境

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l  从正式程度/非正式程度、果断/和气、地位关系、业绩物质回报/非物质回报等维度评估语境

l  了解跨国商务情境中发展关系的文化规则,如商业礼仪、个人仪表、礼物馈赠、管理风格、谈判风格、决策风格、冲突管理、信息技术应用情况等

l  尤其把握跨文化谈判的因素与阶段

 

(十六)第十五节(2课时)

  1. 授课主题:文化对语境的影响②:教育情境

2. 学生学完本次课后,应达到以下基本要求:

l   知晓多元文化教育的诸多趋势和挑战

l   增强多元文化能力

l   提高多元文化交流能力,掌握多元文化交流基本策略
